As a wine region, Burgundy historically lived in the shadow of Bordeaux, with even Philip the Bold lamenting the region`s antiquated farming and winemaking methods, which endured for centuries. It wasn`t until the 1970s and `80s that a revolutionary shift towards eco-friendly winemaking and vineyard practices emerged, shaping Burgundy`s stellar reputation today. This transformation coincided with the ascent of Pinot Noir in California.

Last year, Pinot Talks was featured in @Decanter`s "At the Healdsburg Wine & Food Experience – California Pinot Noir takes on Burgundy," and we are thrilled to be returning this year!
"Sommelier, author, and speaker @AnthonyGiglio and @KostaBrowne`s Senior Estate Director @ReginaSanz guided consumers through a blind tasting of three flights of three separate Pinot Noirs. The seminar`s panelists included winemaker Mike Waller of @CaleraWine, @JasmineHirsch of @HirschVineyards and Josh Orr (@somm_morr) MS of @BroadbentSelections."
"The results demonstrated the difficulty in identifying a wine blind based on the region`s classic or historical markers – a factor of individual style expression and climate change. After each flight, attendees voted on whether the wines were from California or Burgundy. In one flight, 76% of the room believed that a 2017 Calera from Jensen Vineyard in California`s Mt. Harlan AVA was from Burgundy. `It is a wine that has its spanks on,` mused Jasmine Hirsch, clarifying that `it will gain in weight and fruit and texture, and now we are just seeing the skeleton.`"

Pinot Noir from Oregon is among the most acclaimed in the world, but is it so different from California Pinot? Unmistakable nuances in climate and terroir are what set these two areas apart. For example, Oregon is generally cooler than California and receives more rainfall, resulting in a Pinot that tends to be lighter in color, somewhat leaner in body, and has a more delicate texture. Eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, at an elevation just above the coastal fog, lies one of the premier Pinot Noir vineyards in Russian River Valley - Treehouse Vineyard.

Previously, this land was used for grazing cattle, which meant there was no need for a source of water. To this day, water must be carted up to the vineyard to hydrate the vines.

Another premier Pinot Vineyard in California is the Cerise Vineyard, located in Anderson Valley. This vineyard is on a beautiful hillside situated between 800 - 1,100ft elevation on a very steep and rocky south-facing slope in the northeast range of mountains above the town of Boonville. Its elevation and exposure place it directly in the fog layer, resulting in significant diurnal swings making for complex and well-structured wines. #TopPinotSites
